I would think that most ordinary people that surf the internet are unaware that something called their IP address (Internet Protocol Address) along with other information like their browser and operating system type is sent to each website they visit. Each website you surf to can use your IP address to find out where you are located in the world, not just in cyberspace. Even the search engines use your IP address to profile your surfing habits. If cyber criminals get your IP address they can try and gain access to your computer system or other internet device such a mobile phone.

The commercial service may work in a similar way but may use a combines the encryption of a Virtual Private Network (VPN) with rotating shared IP addresses. This basically means that the connection between your computer and the commercial service's servers is over a secure link and they send your traffic out over IP addresses which they choose from a large list of their own IP addresses. They will use a different IP address is each day you use the service so it is not possible for search engine sites to keep track of your web browsing habits.

There are some additional benefits because of the technology used by the commercial service if you like accessing the Internet through WiFi connections at airports‚ shopping malls‚ coffee shops‚ or libraries, because hackers lurking in these hotspots cannot eavesdrop on these types of secure connection.
