When you have the need to cut out a person
or object from a background, one of the ways to go about it is by using
the Quick Mask mode in photoshop. This feature allows you to control
what you want selected, so you can easily copy, cut, and paste the
object onto any other canvas or photo.
- Open Photoshop
- Choose the photo you wish to use
- Select "black" from the swatch palette.
- Click the "Quick Mask Mode" button.
- Select the "Paint Brush".
- Begin coloring over the person in the photo. When you are in Quick
Mask Mode, the paint brush will paint a light transparent red. This
indicates which area you are masking off from the photo.
- Choose a smaller brush for the edges to get more precise.
- When you are done, click on the "Edit in Standard Mode" button.
- You should now see your painted mask area as a selection. However
this is selecting the background and we want to select the person or
object, so we need to inverse the selection.
- Pick Select > Inverse from the main menu.
- The selection will now be reversed so that the selection area is that of the person or object, not the background.
- Now we can hit CTRL+C to copy the selection.
- To paste the copied selection to another photo, open your other photo background into photoshop.
- With the new photograph selected, hit CTRL+V to paste the selection on to the other photograph.
